Laja was the first kraft pulp mill built in Chile and the second in South America. It began operating in 1959 with production capacity of 80,000 ADt per year. After several upgrade projects, it has now reached annual production of 330,000 tons which includes 260,000 tons of pulp and 70,000 tons of paper.
In 2009, CMPC began an extensive renovation plan at the mill with the aim of ensuring the ability to compete in the long term while continuing environmental performance that is compatible with the best technologies available.
The project was developed in stages through 2012 and calls for a total investment of around US$300 million. Laja Mill is located 550km south of Santiago in Bío Bío region at the confluence of the Laja and Bío Bío Rivers.
The pulp produced at this mill has received CERTFOR-PEFC Chain of Custody certification along with the FSC Chain of Custody certification.
