Environment

Empresas CMPC believes firmly in applying the principal of Sustainable Development which implies harmonizing its current productive activities with the legitimate right of future generations to live in a healthy environment.

The company expresses this environmental policy through four principal lines of action:

1. Sustainable forest management
The wood consumed by CMPC comes from renewable rapid-growth plantations that were established principally on eroded lands, which renewed the soil and helped preserve natural forests. Its management is CERTFOR-PEFC certified.

2. Efficient use of energy
Some 69% of the energy used in CMPC's pulp and paper production in 2010 came from bio-mass. Principal sources of bio-mass were the wood remains from plantation management, lignin that separated from the pulp, and industrial mud generated during the treatment of liquid effluents.

3. Sustainable use of water
Improved mills efficiency has allowed the company to reduce water consumption, which is 92% derived from surface sources.

4. Paper recycling
Nearly 45% of CMPC's paper production in 2010 came from recycled fibers, a figure which includes its mills in Chile, Brazil, Argentina, Peru, Uruguay and Mexico. The company has its own firms that specialize in recycling in Chile, Argentina, Peru, Mexico and Colombia.

CMPC operates under the concept of eco-efficiency. It uses relatively little surface land to produce wood which helps it contribute to preservation of the vast biodiversity in native Chilean forests.

CMPC's Forest Assets in Chile (2010)
